Reflecting on the Past, Plan for the Upcoming Year

Our driving season is over, and we are getting ready for the holiday season. As you read this, we will have eaten too much at our Thanksgiving getto-together with friends, attended the Silver Sage Holiday party, and put up our Christmas decorations. We, like many of our friends, spend December reflecting on the past year and planning for the upcoming year.

It has been a good year. We were once again able to travel. In the last issue I recounted some of the highlights of our regional visits. Recently, I received notification from PCA that it was time to submit National Award nominations. These are due by year-end and include the following awards: Region of the Year, Enthusiast of the Year, Family of the Year, and Public Service Award. If you feel your region or individual(s) in your region are deserving of these awards, I ask that you take the time to send in a nomination.

I have been working with Ernie Munroe of the Silver Sage Region to update the Zone 6 logo. We are attempting to take the design features of the current logo – mountains and the coast, while making it more social media friendly. I have included my top two choices. I welcome your input.

It is not too early to start your 2023 PCA plans. Nancy and I have already started; we will be joining the Pacific Northwest Region in January, attending the PCA Winter meeting in February, and holding the Zone 6 President’s meeting in March.

There will be a lot of PCA national activities to partake in 2023, including; Spring Treffen Georgia – registration opens Jan 4th! Parade Palm Springs – June 18th thru 24th. Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca – September 28th thru October 1st. Please consult PCA.org for details on each of these events.

We wish all of you a very joyous holiday season and Happy New Year! Stay healthy and we will see you in the Zone.

First Snow in Idaho Signals End of My 911 Driving Season

We just had the first snow of the season in the West Central Mountains of Idaho. This signals the end of my driving season. Our 911 is now safely stored away, under cover, for the winter. The annual maintenance was performed, the tires are over-inflated and setting on Race Ramp Flatstoppers, the car was cleaned and waxed. The snow tires are on the Macan, and I am dreaming of powder days on the ski slopes.

Nancy and I have had a great summer of visiting all the Zone 6 regions. We have enjoyed a variety of events: wine tours, driving tours, a Treffen, coffee and cars, and a picnic at the Evergreen Aviation Museum. Each has been unique and very fun. It was great to get to the far corners of Zone 6 and meet many of you. We are already planning our drives for next year. One of our planned 2023 events is the Spring Treffen Georgia Mountains. Check it out at: Treffen North America (pca.org). While many may not consider attending due to the driving distance, the Treffen folks have made arrangements with Porsche Drives to have a limited number of rental Porsches available for the event.

Covid has had many negative impacts on our lives; however, in some cases it has allowed us to make lemonade out of the lemon. One of these is that it introduced us to new ways of meeting – the use of Zoom/Teams/ etc. for virtual meetings. I have family and friends that have virtual get- togethers as a substitute when they can’t travel to meet in person. Previously, Zone 6 Region Presidents have annually gotten together in person to discuss key issues. In 2022, this meeting was held in Boise. In November, I will be holding a virtual meeting to discuss 2023 Region Signature events, issues that are impacting the Zone 6 regions, and the date and location of the 2023 in-person meeting.

Many of the Zone 6 Regions are holding their annual officer elections during this time of the year. I would ask that if you have the time and inclination that you consider being more involved in your region’s activities. And please take the time to vote. Stay healthy and we will see you in the Zone.

High Desert Region Hosts Memorable Bend Treffen

We are now home after enjoying the Treffen Bend. The weather mostly cooperated and the High Desert Region volunteers and the PCA National staff put on a great event. Special thanks go out to Pete Olsen and his High Desert Region team of volunteers for showing all a great time.

Mark your calendars, in 2023, the Spring Treffen will be held in April at the Barnsley Resort in Adairsville, GA. The Fall Treffen will be held in September, in St. Louis. These are great events, and we would strongly suggest you consider attending a Treffen in 2023.

While fall signals, for many of us, that we are nearing the end of our driving season, there are still many great Zone 6 region events, like the Oktoberfast, Brian Redman Tech ED, Olympia Peninsula regions’ wine tour. See the Zone 6 website for more information.

PCA now has more than 150,000 members! Our Zone continues to grow in membership. Through August, the ten Zone 6 Regions have added 222 new members. There are 6,916 PCA members in Zone 6. Silver Sage Region is the 4th fastest growing PCA region in factored growth among the 147 PCA Regions!

Nancy and I are winding up our 2022 visits to the Zone 6 regions. As I pen this Newsletter, we have been to all but two of the regions. We have been graciously welcomed everywhere we have gone. Thank you.

Zone 6 is spread across a large area – three US states and a Canadian province. As we travelled across the Zone, we found a shared passion for the Porsche marque and we live up to the PCA mantra. “It’s not just the cars. It’s the people!”.

We head out next to the Pacific Northwest Region’s North Cascade Highway tour and then to the Olympic Peninsula’s wine tour. We hope to see many of you as we travel around Zone 6.

We are now home after visiting four Zone 6 regions; Canada West, BC Interior, Oregon, and Inland Northwest. First up was a trip to Sun Peaks and Escape 2022. The drive up and down Sun Peaks access road made every outing fun. Next was a trip to Oregon for their summer picnic and an opportunity to visit the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville. I never realized how massive the Spruce Goose is. Our last outing was to Inland Northwest Region’s 50th Anniversary gala. While there, we got re- acquainted with the tour leaders that lead Nancy and I on our very first PCA driving tour, many years ago. Thank you, again, Keith and Rick.

I am happy to report the revamped Zone 6 website will go live the end of August. My thanks to Heinz Holzapfel, Oregon Region, for his efforts. The site has five key components: Our Home page will note marquee events from the Zone 6 regions and PCA national. The ‘About Us’ section will describe our Zone and its history. The ‘Events’ portion will have direct links to each of our region’s web pages and their corresponding events pages. We will also have links to PCA National’s web pages and a ‘Contact Us’ section. I urge you to visit the updated site: zone6.pca.org. We will be making quarterly updates to the site to include a photo section, software updates, etc.

I continue to enjoy seeing Zone 6 region activities celebrated in PCA’s Panorama magazine. This month my thanks to; Nancy Mao / Canada West, Gary Proefke / Cascade, Mike Friend / Olympic Peninsula, Ken Moore / High Desert, Steve Fairbrother / Vancouver Island, and Andrew King / Silver Sage, for promoting Zone 6 activities.

We head out next to Cascade Region Southern Chapter’s Coffee & Cars, then over to High Desert Region’s hosting of the Sun River Treffen. We hope to see many of you as we travel around Zone 6.

Hello from New Hampshire. Nancy and I are a little over halfway through our East Coast tour, with a key stop at the Parade at the Kalahari Resort in the Poconos, PA. We now have driven over 3,800 miles in 65 hours and visited 13 states.

This 2022 Parade did not disappoint. We arrived the Friday before the Sunday official start of Parade for several pre-meetings. As a new Zone Rep, I had not met, in person, most of my fellow zone reps and the national chairs. It is always great to put a name with a face. Zoom is great; however, it does not allow for the same type of interaction that in person meetings do. We had presentations from the new DE National chair, Mia Walsh, regarding her plans for changes to PCA DE’s. Mia noted she will be holding a Zoom meeting on June 28 to discuss changes to the DE minimum standards and other topics. Paul Kudra, new AX National chair, reminded us of the documents available to regions that are holding or will be holding AX events. Ron Gordon, National Parade chair, noted the 2023 Parade will be held in Palm Springs, CA, and the 2024 Parade will be held in Birmingham, AL. For those already calendaring 2023/2024 events, these Parades will be held in June.

I am happy to report that several Zone 6 Regions received awards at Parade for their websites and newsletters. Oregon Region was recognized for their website and newsletter. Congratulations to Peg Ryan and Heinz Holzapfel. Pacific Northwest Region was recognized for their newsletter and newsletter cover. Congratulations to Doug Andreassen. Vancouver Island Region was recognized for their newsletter and website. Congratulations to Dave Nickel and Steve Fairbrother.

Nancy and I will return to Idaho in late June from our eastern drive. We head out next to Canada West Region’s Escape 2022 in mid-July. We hope to see many of you there.

The 2022 driving season has begun! Since the last issue, we have driven our Porsches over 5,000 miles. Our first trip was to Treffen Colorado Springs. It did not disappoint. The tours we signed up for were great. In fact, our tour leader for Pikes Peak was on his class’s podium for five of his six Pikes Peak Hill Climbs. His insight was fascinating, and the personal stories were great. Next up was Vancouver Island Region’s Black Rock Charity event. VIR’s event is a multi-region, we met folks from Zones 6 and 14. The Black Rock event had something for everyone; tours, DE, and Autocross. One of the advantages of being a Zone Rep is, I get to go to wonderful locations like Black Rock, see great cars and meet wonderful people.

On June 29th, registration for Treffen Bend opens. This event is to be held at the Sun River Resort, September 14-18th. Treffen Bend information is now available at Treffen North America (pca.org). Treffen Bend is the first Zone 6 based Treffen. Let’s help make it a sellout. Make your plans, log on early, and I hope to see you in Bend, OR.

PCA has a wealth of materials for you to plan and successfully hold a tour, DE, or Autocross. These can be found at the PCA website, www.pca.org. After signing on, you will be presented with a list of Commonly Used Links. Select the ‘FORMS & DOCS’ link and you will be taken to a long list of available resources. Please review the PCA minimum standards for the event type you are planning to hold and develop your event so that it conforms. After the event is held, please make sure the After Event (due within five days), and Observer Reports (due within 10 days) are completed. These reports are required for all PCA-insured activities. By adhering to the minimum standards and filing post event reports, we are helping to keep PCA insurance rates low.

The issues impacting Zone 6 regions we focused on included data security and privacy, newsletters, and volunteerism. We discussed the importance to have key documents stored securely and why we need to protect the privacy of member data. Region newsletters continue to be a source of concern. Publish online or hardcopy or both? How much to charge for ads? It is never easy to fill region positions and COVID regulations have made it more difficult to reach out and get folks to fill leadership positions within our regions. It is my hope that the discussions we had will start us down the path to successful resolutions.

January was a busy month planning for 2022, and as one would expect, Covid continues to impact our plans. My first PCA winter meeting was to be held in Jacksonville, Florida, until the Omicron variant made a virtual meeting the safer option. The first weekend in February was spent attending PCA University via Zoom. PCA 101 is a crash course on who PCA is and how it operates. On Saturday, we continued, via Zoom, to review the 2022 PCA Strategic Plan and the resources available to the regions.

I am happy to report that PCA continues as the largest single marque car club in the world. As of January 1, 2022: there were 94,347 primary members (households) and 144,560 total members. In 2021, each of the fourteen (14) PCA zones showed growth. Zone 6 was third in growth, with an 8.2% growth rate.

PCA provides a wealth of support through its committees, Region Focus webinars, and subsidies. Whether you are a Region officer, a tour/event organizer, or volunteer, information on how PCA can support you can be found at www.pca.org, or in the Region President’s Manual (RPM). Please use these valuable resources.

On March 19, the Zone 6 Region Presidents will meet in Boise to discuss the PCA Strategic Plan, Risk Management, Region Leadership 101, and include an open discussion on issues impacting our regions. With the hopeful easing of Covid travel restrictions, I hope that we can return to a more normal tour environment. To that end, I have invited Greg Halverson, PCA National Tour director and PNWR member, to discuss running tours. Greg reported at the winter meeting that the top two regions in tours were: Zone 6, Oregon and Canada West.

Nancy and I are now registered for Parade in June, and Spring Treffen at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. By the time you read this, we hope to be reg- istered for Vancouver Island Region’s Black Rock 2022. We continue to look for more opportunities to visit the Zone 6 regions.
